Think before you speak...better yet just don't speak at all
Everyone’s favorite squinty eyed Pentecostal televangelist Pat Robertson may have pushed the envelope a little too far recently. On Monday’s 700 club tele-evangelism power hour Robertson said in regards to Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez:
"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," Robertson told viewers on his "The 700 Club" show Monday. "It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war."
Robertson believes that Chavez is planning to spread communism and Islamic communism throughout the United States. President Chavez was said recently he believes the United States is trying to assassinate him, challenging the U.S. by threats of shutting off oil flow from Venezuela to the U.S. This would account for more then 10% of all U.S. oil imports. Robertson went on to say:
"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said. "We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."
The United States has denied such allegations in the past. Policy issues during the administrations of President Reagan and Ford banned assassinations for political purposes.
Robertson has made statements of similar proportion in the past. During the presidential campaign last October, Robertson told CNN that during a meeting with President Bush that he believed there would be no casualties. Even the white house strongly denied this claim. Then again they have a history of denying claims. Among other various statements of similar magnitude Robertson claimed that:
"Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up,"
Robertson was referring to The State Department’s via its nickname. State Department spokesman Richard Boucher called the remark “Despicable”
Robertson is just an interesting individual altogether. Born Marion Gordon Robertson on March 22, 1930 in Lexington Virginia, at a young age he was given the nickname of “Pat” by his brother who would pat him on the cheeks as a baby saying “pat pat pat”. When Robertson became older he considered the two names he was referred to and decided to go with Pat because Marion was too effeminate. Now to me trying to figure out if Pat or Marion is too effeminate is kind of like trying to distinguish black from navy in the middle of the night in a lightless cave. Regardless, Patricia…I mean Pat… graduated with honors from Washington and Lee University …served in the marine core reserves, and then found Jesus. After acquainting himself with the Lord Patty…er...uh...Pat established the Christian Broadcasting Network which now is seen over 180 countries and in 71 languages.
Robertson announced he would contend for the republican nomination for President of the United States in 1988 running on a very conservative ticket…hmm shocking eh? Although he mustered a large following and budget his presidential dreams would not be. The demise of his campaign came when we referred to himself as a combat marine who served in the Korean War. Either Robertson was extremely stupid or just not aware what the definition of the word combat was. Apparently fellow marines serving with Patsy were outraged stating that Robertson never saw a day in the combat environment in his life. Not only that, but Robertson’s CHIEF responsibility was supplying alcoholic beverages for his officers. His political career simply went kaput. Robertson turned to political activism speaking out against feminism, homosexuality and liberalism.
Regardless of lying about his military record, preaching against feminism, homosexuality, liberalism, and making sure his name did not reflect a effeminate quality, George W. Bush….Pat Robertson rather… is doing quite fine financially with an estimated net worth of $200 million dollars. Perhaps Mr. Robertson should not be so effeminate and request other the government to assassinate President Chavez; perhaps Robertson should be a man about it and settle things himself. Last time I checked $200 million can buy a gun and a bullet. Then again it’s a lot easier to make claims and statements on a television show where many of the networks on which it airs needs disclaimers to legally protect itself from the views expressed. Settle things man to man Robertson, I mean you’ve had military training and you’ve seen combat…no no wait that was a lie.
